What Explaining Marketing To A 5 Year Old Taught Me

Last week, I was invited to my daughter’s daycare to talk about what I do for work.

Explaining marketing to a room of 3–5 year olds isn’t exactly straightforward — so I brought a prop: a bright foam frisbee. I told them it was a Super Splash Frisbee that you can throw at the park and in the pool.

Their job? Help me tell the world how fun it is.

And just like that, they nailed the basics of marketing:

  • Know your audience.

  • Show what makes it great.

  • Share it with excitement.

It was the best reminder that marketing doesn’t have to be complicated. The best messages are simple, clear, and easy to connect with — even a five-year-old can get them.

Sometimes it takes a class of preschoolers (and a floating frisbee) to bring you back to the heart of what good marketing really is.
